DO YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE? ... Of all the extractions derived from the leaves of Bixa Orellana, chemical substances have been obtained such as flavonoides, alkaloids, hydroquinones and steroids that justify its therapeutic use as a medicinal plant. The presence of steroids in the leaves of the achiote suggests that they are responsible for the anti-inflammatory properties that causes this popular medicine to be used as an anti-rheumatic treatment and for inflammations of the prostate. Also due to the presence of flavonoides (flavonoides are compound phenolic acids that belong to the popular phytochemicals), this product demonstrates a wide-ranging benefit to general health; it functions as an anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogen, anti-inflammatory, immune system booster and diuretic, supporting the urinary and genital tracts. Among its therapeutic properties are also anti-gonorrheal functions (a sexually-transmitted disease caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhea), as well as astringent and diuretic uses. Diverse studies have demonstrated that the extract of the leaves of the Bixa Orellana are also effective anti-bacterial and fungicidal agents. At the University of Waterloo (Canada), preliminary studies have shown the extract of Bixa Orellana has proven successful against gram-positive germs B. subtilis, S. aureua and S. faecalis); as well as E. coli, S. marescens, Cándida utilis and Aspergillus niger. The minimum inhibited concentration of the extract was of 4-16 mg/ml, while the germicidal activity was markedly higher at 16-64 mg/ml. Clinical studies carried out in Peru conclude that Bixa Orellana has been effective in treating Clotrimazol; as well as Gardenella vaginalis, Trichomoniasis and to a smaller degree candida albicans, all sexually transmitted diseases. The preliminary results of these studies have proven that achiote is an effective diuretic, anti-gonorrheal and anti-bacterial, as well as a valuable tool in the treatment of inflammation of the prostate and urinary and genital tract problems, where treatment usually requires antibacterial and diuretic products. Since studies are preliminary and on-going, a final therapeutic regimen hasnot been established for achiote. Some researchers indicate that achiote leaves or extract can be used for an extended period of time, since no toxicity history as been recorded or observed.
